Small and medium enterprises (SME) are the backone of modern market economy of EU-28, including Slovakia. They create the majority of job positions and gross domestic product and are the biggest contributors into national budget in the form of taxes and fees. It is very important to support citizens with doing business in terms of creating favorable conditions for business environment as so as for supporting the entrepreneurs during their first steps and years of their business. Aim of the article is to point out the current status of SMEs and sentiment of Slovak citizens towards starting the own business including identification of preferences of people who started to make business or are thinking about it. It is clear from the identified results that citizens prefer and expect selected types of support when they start their business in the size of SME.
